God Fall

A routinely inoffensive, sometimes likable adventure that’s impossible to love. When a game is diverting enough that it stops me from having an existential crisis every 20 minutes, but also accessible enough I don’t need to YouTube six separate guides to get past the tutorial, that's a win in my pea-brained book.

Despite its shortcomings, which I'll get to, there aren’t too many things about this self-proclaimed "looter slasher" that actively grind my gears. The chief complaint? There's too much repetitive busywork involved in finishing a game that’s a fairly straightforward mix of generic hack-and-slash action spliced with boss rush elements.

The high fantasy setting and simple loot system might be derivative, but God fall is rarely outright objectionable. The story—mostly told through stiff cutscenes where your knight chats with a big floaty face and a hooded blacksmith in a between-missions hub area—is one-note and easily skippable. It can be described as a fantasy medieval game with modern graphics.

Control

Control is a third-person action-adventure video game created by Finnish game studio Remedy Entertainment. The game revolves around the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), a secret U.S. government agency tasked with containing and studying para-natural phenomena. As Jesse Faden, the Bureau's newest Director, players explore the Oldest House - the FBC's paranormal New York headquarters - and utilize powerful abilities to defeat a deadly enemy known only as of the Hiss.

Control was released on August 27, 2019, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Two downloadable expansions followed the game's release; Expansion 1: The Foundation was released on March 26th, 2020, while Expansion 2: AWE was released on August 27th, 2020.

From Max Payne to Quantum Break, Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment was always pushed the graphics envelope forward, and its latest release, Control, is no different. It’s a perfect showcase for how ray-tracing can elevate an environment, with lighting bouncing off of every possible surface inside The Oldest House. Although Control has a stark visual style, the environments themselves don’t have too much going on (outside of a whole lot of concrete, that is). With Remedy’s excellent lighting system, though, even concrete looks good. The game graphics add up to the story to make the game feel look better.

Watch Dogs Legion

A couple hours into Watch Dogs Legion I look at my small team of DedSec agents and think to myself: These people suck. The concept seems sound—rather than playing a traditional protagonist, you recruit a team of heroes from randomly generated, ordinary citizens of London. The problem with ordinary people, though, is that they're ordinary. I have a filmmaker on my team. An ambulance driver. A legal assistant. A lady whose only skill is that she owns a car.

It's not exactly a dream team, and initially, I'm so uninterested in my collection of "heroes" that when one of them (the car lady) is kidnapped by an enemy I don't even bother rescuing her. Go ahead and keep her, I shrug. I can steal a car if I need one.

But a few hours and several new recruits later, another member of my team is kidnapped, and this time I fly into an absolute rage. This is another team member who owns a car, but it's an extremely fast car because he's not just a driver, he's a getaway driver. He has a skill that prevents police drones from chasing him while he's driving and another skill that forces every car in his path off the road, parting traffic like the Red Sea. Both are indispensable to me. He also has a cool leather jacket and driving gloves and shades—he just looks like a driver from an action movie. I like this guy a lot, and I like playing as him, and the thought of some enemy stealing him from me is absolutely unacceptable. That's when I realize Legion's play-as-anyone system is actually working for me, and that I've gotten invested in it. It just took a while to assemble a team of anyone's I actually cared about.

While Watch Dogs Legion does not scale that well on older hardware, it does push great graphics. This is easily the game with the best graphics from Ubisoft, as it tops Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Hyper Scape, and Immortals Fenix Rising. Watch Dogs Legion features a great lighting system, better NPCs, and a more lively city. On Ultra settings, the pop-ins of various objects are also minimal (and not as in your face as in Valhalla). Furthermore, it comes with some cool Ray Tracing reflections. Its graphics are greater than say a game like GTA5 because of its improvements in graphic optimization.

Metro Exodus

Metro Exodus is not a gigantic, seamless open-world game. It's a focused, segmented first-person shooter that gets increasingly linear as you progress. It's much more open than previous Metro games and it does have some chunky environments for you to explore, but it is not the same kind of sandbox survival experience as, say, Fallout 4 - and it isn't trying to be. It is, however, fantastic. Metro Exodus blends the survival elements and carefully constructed levels that the Metro series is known for with a dynamic world that's as beautiful as it is dangerous, to stunning results.

Where previous Metro games took place in the titular underground rail system, Metro Exodus takes players to the surface as protagonist Artyom and his fellow Spartan soldiers - including his wife Anna and her father Colonel Miller - chart a course across an irradiated Russia aboard the Aurora locomotive. Their journey starts in spring and stretches into the depths of winter, and each season ushers in a totally new area. The biggest maps in the game, the Volga and the dried-out Caspian Sea are peppered with side stuff. Contrastingly, the forested, autumnal Taiga feels like a sightseeing tour on a more guided mission. I poked around a few buildings in the Taiga, but I pretty much stuck to the path laid out for me by the main objectives.

The dreaded “but can it run Crysis” question continues to this day, even though Crysis released in 2007. For PC gaming circles, the benchmark for computing power was quickly replaced by Metro 2033 when it was released in 2010, and the series has remained a pillar of PC performance since. The latest entry, Metro Exodus, is fitted with all of the current graphical trends, including real-time ray-tracing, per-object motion blur, and liberal use of tessellation. Its graphics quality increases because of the correct use of contrast in both day and night environments.

Cyberpunk 2077

I've spent more time than I'd like to admit just staring at Night City. At its neon-lit streets, dappled with pink and yellow after rain; at the smoke rising through the elevator shaft in V's apartment building; at the shimmer of chrome running through the arms and faces of NPCs; at the lurid metallics and high-gloss clothing that adorn its citizens; or simply at yet another city-wide vista I've discovered after driving to a new hill in the Badlands. Cyberpunk 2077 is beautiful.

Cyberpunk 2077's world is such an aesthetic joy that it feels disrespectful to fast travel or skip drives in Night City. At times, it feels as if the game has transformed into some living, voyeuristic screensaver, such is its ability to distract with its good looks. It's not just the way the city comes to life at night either, as the appropriately titled Night City does look ridiculous in the dark – all neon shimmer and glowing reflections, the headlights of your car carving out a path through the concrete or the dust of the Badlands. Night City brings out the beauty in every slice of the day. But it's always quick to remind you that life within Night City is brutal, raw, and oh so violent. But that's what you're hoping for right? After all, a great setting will only get you so far.

Cyberpunk 2077 has just been released on the PC and looks absolutely gorgeous. The game features highly detailed characters, and one of the best cities we’ve ever seen. CDPR was able to capture the sci-fi atmosphere of Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell. Furthermore, the lighting system in Cyberpunk 2077 is amazing. The game does suffer from some issues (like pop-ins of objects and lights), which is why it could not top our next title. Still, and alongside its Ray Tracing effects, Cyberpunk 2077 is a game built for next-gen hardware. The minor details in the complete game art of cyberpunk make it among the games with the best graphics.

Red Dead Redemption 2

There’s no way to say the following without sounding wildly definitive, so here goes…. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the best-looking video game of all time. Yes, EVER. And that includes Uncharted 4. It’s also the best game of the past five years. Compare this Wild West epic to GTA 3’s blocky Liberty City and its cast of fugly thugs you probably kneecapped on a tiny TV 17 years ago, and the evolution is astounding. At times, it’s scarcely believable how good Rockstar’s latest sandbox looks and feels.

Not counting GTA 5’s remaster, this is the first game the studio has properly released this console generation. Unsurprisingly, in the years since the Los Santos sensation launched, Rockstar has built up a wealth of things to say. As such, RDR2 is a game of big themes and even bigger ideas. The evils of creeping capitalism. Corrupt regimes. The loss of long-held beliefs. With its contextual conversations, where its outlaw lead can either greet or antagonize hundreds of bespoke NPCs, the game also tries to move open-worlds forward. Here, your main interactions often involve swapping pleasantries (or devastating, old-timey disses), while significant portions of the main story involve quiet, peaceful character-building. Compared to the wanton carousel of slaughter so many other sandboxes choose to ride, RDR2’s more thoughtful, less trigger-happy approach feels like a progressive step. Although that said, you still end up shooting hundreds of dudes. Don’t worry, most of ‘em deserve it. It's having the most technologically advanced graphics with a colorful contrast.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has a tailing mission in its main campaign. A very knowing one, full of complaints from Viking Eivor at their target’s speed, but a tailing mission nonetheless. But why start here in a review when there is a sprawling Mercia to celebrate with a raised horn of mead? A frankly ludicrously beautiful world of rolling hills, mystical snowy castle ruins, and the eventual ability to dual wield a longsword and a gleaming ax bigger than most of the inhabitants of your settlement. Oh, and the fact that you can ride a giant wolf instead of a horse, who’ll come lolloping into view at the press of a button and growl with a satisfying low rumble, not unlike a truck engine...

It's because that tailing mission is important though, vital even. Don’t worry, there’s only that one but it’s important to address straight away that Valhalla has managed to perfectly rekindle the fires of the traditional Assassin’s Creed experience. One where hay is key and endless ropes stretch helpfully across villain-filled streets. And yes, it’s lit these embers with a torch and a roar.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is still using the AnvilNext 2.0 engine that Odyseey and Origins used, and on PC, the three games are very close when it comes to overall visual quality. We’re giving this slot to Vahalla not only because it’s one of the best Assassin’s Creed games — as well as the most recent — but also because it offers a nice setting change from the games that proceeded it.

As expected from a modern, open-world Ubisoft game, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla looks great, but it’s the game’s snow-filled setting that makes it stand apart from Origins and Odyssey. Valhalla doesn’t have ray tracing or many of the visual features that other games on this list will showcase (Valhalla is using an engine from 2014, after all). Despite that, Valhalla remains a visual powerhouse that can go up against any of the games on this list, especially with HDR turned on. Its graphics can lead your normal pc to get goosebumps.
